Canvas@Illinois, Upgrade Legacy DesignPLUS content for use with New DesignPLUS Sidebar
If you previously developed content with the Legacy DesignPLUS Sidebar, you will need to upgrade that content to be compatible with the New DesignPLUS Sidebar. Before proceeding, please be aware that you need to review each page of content (and cannot upgrade an entire course site at the same time). Although this can take some time, this is intentional so you can be sure your content still functions as expected with the upgraded tools.
There are two ways to access the upgrade tools: the Course-Wide Upgrade Tool or Individual Page Upgrade Tool. If you're unsure where to start, it's recommended you start with the Course-Wide Upgrade Tool because it will provide you with an easy workflow to streamline upgrading content.
Access the Course-Wide Upgrade Tool
- Select Settings in the course navigation menu in your course site.
- Select the rocket ship icon in the top right corner (note: if you don't see the rocket ship right away, make sure you have the New DesignPLUS Sidebar enabled: Canvas@Illinois, Enable the New DesignPLUS Sidebar)
- Select the Course Upgrade button to open the tool.
- Select the Scan Course button.
- You'll see progress indicators as it scans the contents of your course and then will display a short summary of what needs to be upgraded (and highlights legacy content in yellow). Select the Review Items button to access the full report and to review the content.
- Select the Review Selected Items button to begin reviewing your upgraded content, or use the other tools to sort/review content:
- Review Selected Items button: Provides an easy workflow to systematically review your content.
- Review Item button: Opens an individual page for you to review the upgraded content.
- Legacy Content and New Content columns: Use this columns to sort by legacy content (that needs to be upgraded) or new content (that was already upgraded).
- Status Column: Displays whether or not the page of content has already been reviewed.
- When Reviewing Selected Items, you'll see a preview of the upgraded content. If everything looks expected, select the Approve Upgrade button. If needed, you can also compare with the legacy version in the Original Content Preview tab.
- Once all items have been reviewed, you'll see the New Content and Status columns updated and can close out of the upgrade tool by selecting the "X" in the top right corner.
Report a problem with upgraded content
If you notice an issue with your upgraded content (for example, if an accordion isn't working correctly or styling changed significantly), you can report the issue directly to the vendor (Cidi Labs) by selecting the Report a Problem button and filling out the Report a Problem form. Submitting the problem this way will provide the vendor with a copy of the HTML on the page and help them troubleshoot the issue.
Individual Page Upgrade
To upgrade individual pages one at a time, you can access the upgrade tool in two ways:
- Access the Accessibility/Usability tab and select the Upgrade button
- Open the notification at the bottom of the New DesignPLUS Sidebar (will appear only if Legacy content is recognized on the page)
Upgrading Content
In general, we recommend upgrading all content on your page at once to make sure you don't have a combination of Legacy and New content on the same page (which could cause problems when editing content in the long term).
- With the Upgrade tool open, select the Upgrade All # Items (Recommended) button:
- The sidebar will automatically update all content on the page.
- After all content has been updated, you should see a message indicating that there are "no upgrades detected":
