Canvas@Illinois, Roll Call Attendance grade not updating

Canvas offers a free tool to record attendance (called Roll Call Attendance). If you notice issues with attendance grades not correctly updating in the Canvas gradebook, you may be able to troubleshoot and update settings with the suggestions in this article.

Roll Call Attendance is a free tool in Canvas that can help you track attendance and provide a grade to the gradebook. This can be very helpful for some courses but may not work for others, so it's important to read through the documentation. If you decide to use Roll Call Attendance, do not rename, delete, or unpublish the assignment that's generated. Making any of these changes can cause calculation errors!

If you notice that Attendance grades are not correct in the gradebook, you may need to clear the cache of the assignment by doing the following:

  1. Select Attendance in the course navigation menu.
  2. Select the Settings wheel in the top right corner of the tool.
  3. Select Roll Call Settings from the dropdown menu.
  4. Adjust "A Lateness counts as what percent of a presence?" from your selected percentage to be 100%.
  5. Select the "x" to close out of the box.
  6. Refresh the page.
  7. Select the Settings wheel in the top right corner again.
  8. Select Roll Call Settings from the drop down menu.
  9. Adjust "A Lateness counts as what percent of a presence?" from 100% back to your selected percentage.
  10. Refresh the page again.
  11. When you return to the Gradebook, the grades should be updated correctly.
