How to get a custom domain for your website

Custom domains are available through the university domain registration service

Department-level domain - sitename.department.illinois.edu

Cost: 

There is no charge for a department level domains, such as yourdomain.scs.illinois.edu

How to request a department-level domain:

To request a new department-level domain, email your request to scs-computing@illinois.edu.  In your request, please include in your request the following information:

  1. The custom name you would like for your site
    • Example: smithgroup

  2. The department-level domain you would like the site in
    • Example: scs.illinois.edu, chemistry.illinois.edu, or chbe.illinois.edu

  3. Where your website is hosted / the website's current URL
    • Example:  cPanel, current URL is https://smithgroup.web.illinois.edu

Once the domain is created, go to the Next Steps section. 

Custom third-level domain - sitename.illinois.edu

Third level domains are restricted to campus wide centers or endeavors, require approval from campus and are not free. They can only be paid for with university account numbers.

Cost: 

Third-level domains cost $10 per year plus domain registration fees. 

How to request a department-level domain:

First, you must choose a name for the domain - this must conform to the Acceptable Name Guidelines.

Second, email scs-computing@illinois.edu with the following: 

  • Requested domain name
  • Short description of the intended use for the domain
  • University account name and number (BOTH must be included!) to which any registration fees may be charged 
  • Where the website is hosted. Do not request the domain before you have created a hosting location.

Next steps

Once the custom domain is created and points to your web hosting, there are additional steps you will need to complete. 

  • If your website is hosted on the campus cPanel service:
    • The new domain will need to be "parked" on your cPanel account
    • If you are using a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress or Drupal, you should update the CMS's configuration to use the new URL
  • If your website is hosted on PIE (https://publish.illinois.edu), see https://answers.uillinois.edu/illinois/60573
    • When the domain has been created, see the section titled "These website configuration steps should be completed by the owner of the website hosted on Publish", about half-way down the page
  • If your website is hosted elsewhere, refer to the hosting documentation about adding a custom domain
