Canvas@Illinois, Most common questions at the start of the semester
Here are the most common questions and solutions for the start of the semester.
Students:
Where are my classes?
If you do not see your course in Canvas, a couple things may be happening:
-
- If you just registered for a course, it can take up to 4 hours for it to appear in your course list. The professor or TA can add you at anytime, though it's generally best to wait for the system to automatically add you to the course site. Technology Services cannot add you.
- Your instructor may not have published their Canvas course site yet. If you go to your All Courses page in Canvas (select Courses in the global navigation menu and then select the All Courses link), you'll see a list of courses where you're enrolled.
- If you see the course listed but the last column states that it's not published, it means that you are enrolled but the course is not yet available to you. However, you will have access as soon as your instructor publishes the course site.
- If you do not see the course listed, the instructor may not have created the course site yet or the instructor may be using a different learning management system. Contact your instructor directly to see if this is the case.

I dropped a course and it is still there OR my old courses from last semester are still there.
Canvas, A dropped class or an old class from a previous semester still in course list – Courses can take a few hours before they disappear, old courses expire when the professor chooses.
Issue: Cannot watch lecture using the Safari browser and receive the following error: "third-party cookies are disabled."
Solution: Go to System Settings > Safari. Disable “Block All Cookies” and “Prevent Cross-Site Tracking.” If changes don't take effect, quit and restart the Safari app.
Issue: My course menu is not displaying correctly when using the Safari browser
We've recently seen some tickets about this from students who are using the Safari browser on Macs. Most often it looks like this occurs in older versions of Safari. Here are a couple suggestions:
-
- Try accessing Canvas using Chrome or Firefox on your Mac (you should be able to download those browsers if you don't already use them) and see if the problem persists.
- Check to see if your Safari and/or operating system is up to date.
- Disable any extensions you may have in Safari to see if that helps (scroll to the "Turn off extensions" or "Uninstall extensions sections).
