Policy
University-owned animals, maintained as part of a research project/investigational study or other IACUCapproved use, will be eligible for a 20% discount on non-research related care through the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH).
Guidelines
All animals must be registered while in the VTH.
University-owned animals, maintained as part of a research project/investigational study or other IACUC-approved use, will be registered as patients when in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH).
Charges for procedures incurred during the provision of care for these animals, not directly associated with research (i.e., sterilization surgery pending adoption at study conclusion, medical illness requiring treatment prior to return to DAR housing) will be entered into the Health Information System (HIS) and paid for by the appropriate internal account (research grant, contract or startup funds).
Research accounts are entitled to a 20% discount on all allowable VTH services based on costs published in the current fee schedule.
Procedure (if applicable)
The PI responsible for the University owned animal will request that a research account be set up for the animal(s). The employee creating the account and/or registering the patient will make the appropriate changes in the hospital computer system to apply the appropriate discount to the research/internal account. Retrospective application of a research discount will only be offered if the discount was excluded due to an error in our process (i.e., the discount was not verified at the time of check-in). It is the responsibility of the researcher/unit to indicate their status as such.
Charges will be entered into the HIS at the time of care. The account balance will be paid for by the associated internal fund at the time of patient discharge. A 20% discount will be reflected in the patient’s balance for non-research, allowable procedures.
Discounts associated with research are outlined in VTH policy: Research Adjustment- Clinical Research
