Policy
This document outlines the process for providing prescriptions to be filled at the VTH drug room or at an outside pharmacy. This applies to all medications to be filled at a location other than the VMSC. Prescriptions can be entered in SANDI and filled at the VTH drug room or called into an outside pharmacy.
Guidelines
There must be a record of all prescribed drugs in SANDI regardless of where they are dispensed from.
Procedure (if applicable)
Prescribing a Medication to be Dispensed from the VTH Medication Dispensary
- Enter the prescription in VetStar the same way as if filling it at the VMSC. However, do NOT write the statement about filling at the VMSC on the label.
- The prescription will be filled by VTH Dispensary staff and hung with the outpatient medications.
- The medication may be picked up by the client or a representative from VMSC by going to the client prescription pickup window. Alternatively, if the medication is needed when the VTH Dispensary is closed, a VMSC clinician may use their pharmacy access to enter and get the already filled medication or fill it themselves following normal VTH processes.
- Non-controlled outpatient medications already filled will be at the front desk reception desk for after-hours pickup.
Prescribing a Medication to be Filled by an Outside Pharmacy
- Enter an Outside Prescription under the patient’s medical record. Indicate the pharmacy where the medication is called into and the details of the prescription. If the client is being given a paper script, this can be indicated instead of the pharmacy name
