Policy
This document outlines the process of entering prescriptions (inpatient and outpatient) in the HIS (Health Information System). All medications obtained from the VMSC drug room or ward stock must be entered into the HIS.
Guidelines
Medications may be entered into VetStar by anyone with access using the following process.
Procedure (if applicable)
- Go to the patient’s medical record, and go to the Charges screen. Search for the Procedure and follow the steps to complete the prescription.
- Select whether the medication will be administered in hospital or by the owner. If administered by the owner, enter the days’ supply.
- Add refills if desired
- If the medication will be filled at the VMSC type “VMSC to fill” on a line at the end of the directions, or type “VTH to fill”.
- The doctor will need to approve the prescription prior to VMSC or pharmacy filling

Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH): The collective clinical services of the Large Animal Clinic, Midwest Equine, the Small Animal Clinic, and the Veterinary Medicine South Clinic.
