Policy
This document outlines the process for prescription refills for medications originally filled at the VMSC and applies to all medications with refills prescribed by VMSC clinicians. If a prescription has available refills in SANDI, the client may have those refills filled at the VMSC, the VTH or transferred to an outside pharmacy.
Guidelines
The client needs to be informed when they call where their medication will be ready at.
Procedure (if applicable)
- If a medication has refills, the client may call either the VTH drug room or the VMSC and request a refill. While on the phone with the client, verify that they are aware of which location to pick their medication up at.
- When refilling a medication, verify the desired quantity to dispense. Enter the initials of the clinician that will be approving it.
- Make sure the appropriate label printer is selected (defaults to VTH drug room) and print the label.
- Once the refill label has been printed, fill in the same way as a new prescription. If the medication is filled by a tech or student, then it must be verified by a doctor or pharmacist prior to dispensing.
- Once the medication is prepared, bag it and hang in the designated location for medications ready for client pickup. For non-controls, this location will be the front desk. For controlled substances these will need to be put in the lockbox and retrieved by a doctor or tech when the client arrives
