Policy
The intent of this policy is to describe the process for filling medications when a pharmacist is not available. This policy applies to all medications needed while a pharmacist is not available. This does not apply to medications already filled and checked by the pharmacist. When a medication is needed and a pharmacist is not available, it must be pinned on both worklists by a doctor. The medications will be filled by a pharmacy technician with a tech-check-tech process employed.
Guidelines
- When a pharmacist is not available, the clinician will double pin the prescription to generate a label.
- The medication will be filled by a pharmacy technician. A tech-check-tech process will also occur to decrease the risk of errors occurring.
Procedure (if applicable)
- A clinician will pin the medication on both worklists to generate a label.
- A pharmacy technician will evaluate the label and make sure that drug, quantity, etc. look appropriate.
- The medication will be filled by a pharmacy technician and a second pharmacy technician will check the accuracy prior to the medication leaving the Dispensary. Both technicians will initial the label.
