Policy
All controlled substances prescribed to an outside pharmacy must be prescribed by a DEA license holder for VTH patients with a current VCPR in place. The below procedure must be followed for all clinicians utilizing a university DEA number (number beginning with an F).
Guidelines
- A current (within the past year) VCPR must be documented in the HIS prior to prescribing.
- The prescription information must be documented in the HIS utilizing the RXOUT procedure code.
- Doctors may not prescribe controlled substance for their own animals.
- Controlled substances prescribed for client owned animals must be shipped directly to the client’s address and not the VTH.
Procedure (if applicable)
- Ensure a current VCPR is in place and documented appropriately in HIS.
- Verify that the client would like the controlled medication filled at an outside pharmacy and that they are aware they will need to contact the pharmacy to provide payment and shipping information.
- Submit the necessary prescription in accordance with all federal and state laws and specific pharmacy requirements. Prescription must include specific patient identification including tag numbers or names of each individual animal.
- Ensure the prescribing doctor provided to the pharmacy is the VTH doctor authorizing the prescription.
- Let the outside pharmacy know the medication will be shipped directly to the client and the client will be contacting them with shipping and payment information.
- Document in the HIS the outside prescription using the RXOUT procedure code and indicate the prescribing doctor.
