University-Owned Agricultural Animals Requiring Veterinary Care SOP
Procedure:
All veterinary services provided by Veterinary Teaching Hospital or Midwest Equine Services will be charged appropriately. The University-employed Farm Manager or Authorized Personnel will be responsible for authorizing patient care.
Agricultural Animal, Excluding Horses
If veterinary care is required for University-owned food animals, the Farm Animal Reproduction Medicine Services (FARMS) will be contacted via Client Services staff at the Large Animal Clinic. Emergency services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Only Farm Managers or Authorized Personnel should call to coordinate veterinary care.

Weekday, daytime receiving:
Calls to the Large Animal Clinic during normal receiving hours (weekdays, 8 am – 4 pm) to arrange for veterinary care should include information regarding the nature of the veterinary care need, the urgency of that need, the preferred location of care provision (e.g., on-farm vs haul-in), whether or not this animal is in a research trial, and the contact information for the Farm Manager or other Authorized Personnel.
If there is an urgent need for veterinary care, the client services staff will relay that information directly, via phone, to service personnel and will ensure that service personnel have received that information. Service personnel will contact the Farm Manager or other Authorized Personnel within one (1) hour, whenever possible, to coordinate veterinary care.
If there is a non-urgent need for veterinary care, Client Services staff will either schedule the veterinary service routinely or will relay the request for service directly, via phone or text, to service personnel to determine when the care can be scheduled. Service personnel will return non-urgent inquiries for veterinary care services within twenty-four (24) hours or by the next receiving day if on a weekend.
Weekend and after-hours receiving:
Calls to the Large Animal Clinic on weekends or after normal receiving hours on weekdays are routed to the Small Animal Clinic Client Services staff. Only calls for urgent veterinary care needs should be made during weekends or after hours. In these cases, the Client Services staff will relay that information directly, via phone, to on-duty service personnel and will ensure that service personnel have received that information. Service personnel will contact the Farm Manager or other Authorized Personnel within one (1) hour, whenever possible, to coordinate veterinary care.
Horses
If veterinary care is required for University-owned horses, Midwest Equine at Illinois will be contacted directly. Emergency services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Only Farm Managers or Authorized Personnel should call to coordinate veterinary care.
