Canvas@Illinois, Error when attaching file for assignment: "Submit Failed, please try again"

This article provides steps for troubleshooting/fixing issues with submitting a file to an assignment in Canvas if you see the "Submit Failed, please try again" error.

Below is a screenshot of an error you may encounter when trying to submit a file to an assignment. The original "Save" button becomes "Submit Failed, please try again" and prevents you from submitting the assignment:

If you keep seeing the error after refreshing the page, try the following to correct the error:

  • Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: Sometimes the data stored on your computer/browser can cause issues. Clearing the cache and cookies forces the browser to start over and reload the page instead of using cached data.   • Update Browser: Check to make sure your browser is up to date. Canvas is designed to work with all major browsers but you should confirm you're running a current version noted in Instructure's guide: What are the browser and computer requirements for Instructure products?
  • Try a Different Browser: Again, Canvas is designed to work with all major browsers but there may be settings in your current browser that are affecting your ability to submit the assignment. Trying a different browser will help to confirm if it's a browser-specific issue. Generally, Chrome tends to have fewer problems.
    • Note: You may try toggling the setting to prevent cross-site tracking in your browser on or off to see if that corrects the issue.
  • Use an Incognito/Private Window: Using an incognito/private window will turn off any extensions that may be causing issues. Refer to the following Knowledgebase article to learn how to open a private browsing window: AITS - Service Desk - Browser - Private Browsing
  • Try Using a Different Device and/or Internet Connection: Sometimes different firewall settings may prevent the file upload. Most often, this occurs when students are trying to submit an assignment on an employer-provided device that may have different firewall settings enabled. Try using a different device or internet connection to see if that fixes the issue.
