Canvas, Request a Space for a Registrar-Affiliated Course (Detailed)

Use this tool to request a registrar-affiliated course space in Canvas.

Important points on requesting a Canvas space:

  • You must submit one request per course space you would like to create.
  • Select all rosters associated with the space you are requesting to be certain to have all sections included in the space.

The instructions below relate to registrar-affiliated courses only.

  1. Go to
  2. On the login page, enter your NetID and Active Directory password.
  3. Click Login.
  4. On the Request Course Space page, enter the NetID of the owner of the space. Note: By default, this is set to display your NetID. If you are requesting a space for another individual, enter that person's NetID in this field.
  5. Choose the Start Term and End Term of the course from the drop-down menus.
  6. Click Next.
  7. On the Select Rosters to Add to Your Course Space page, you may see rosters listed in the Suggested Course Rosters table. These rosters are filled with the courses for which the Space Owner is listed as the instructor in Banner for the term selected.
    1. If one of the courses listed is a course for which you would like to request a course space, click the box next to the title of the course. Repeat this step for each roster you would like to add to the space request.
    2. Click the Add to Selected Rosters button. Your roster(s) should now appear in the Selected Course Rosters table toward the bottom of the page.
    3. Jump to step #9.
  8. If your roster is not listed in the Suggested Course Rosters table, you can search for it under the Search Course Rosters section by Rubric (which is required) and the course Number:
    1. Enter the Rubric.
    2. Optional: Enter the Number.
    3. Click the Search button. A list of courses related to your search will appear in a table.
    4. Select the roster or rosters you want to add to the space request byclicking the box next to each title.
    5. Click the Add to Selected Rosters button. Your roster(s) should now appear in the Selected Course Rosters table toward the bottom of the page.
    6. Jump to step #9.
    If you determine that one or more rosters need to be removed from the Selected Course Rosters table, click the Remove link. If you would like to remove all of the rosters in the Selected Course Rosters table, click the Remove All link.
  9. Once you have added all of the rosters you want included in this Space Request, click Next.
  10. On the Set Space Title page, you can alter the Course Title and/or Section information; this will be the title and section information your students will see listed in their course list. (You do not have to change these settings if you do not want to, simply click Next.)
    1. Type your preferred Course Title and/or Section
    2. Click Next.
    • Note: If you would like to return the settings to their original content, click the Restore Defaults button.
    1. On the Course Content page, select if you would like content from a previously taught course to be moved into the Canvas system. 
    2. Once you have made your selection, click Next.
    3. On the Submit your Request page, you can enter any special instructions related to the Space Request you are creating. 
    4. On this same page, please read the Terms of Use statement, then click the I Accept button. Note: If you do not accept the Terms of Use, your request for a space will be cancelled.
    5. Click Next.
    6. You will now see a Summary page of your Space Request. You can make edits to any of the information by clicking on the linked text. This will take you back to the page on which that content exists, and you can then edit it, and click Next to proceed forward in the Space Request tool.
    7. When you are satisfied that your Space Request is accurate and complete, click Submit.
    8. You will now see a Success page. This page contains your request number, and a link to the Space Request Status page. It also informs you that an email has been automatically sent to the Space Requestor and the Space Owner (if they are two different individuals). This email will also include a summary of your request and your request number, which will be useful if you need to check the status or report a problem with your  Space Request.
    9. If you wish to request another Canvas Space, click the Request Another Space button, and you will return to the beginning page of the request process. If you are finished with your requests for now, click the Logout button.
