NMR - Mnova installation instructions

Installation and troubleshooting guide for installing the NMR Mnova software

Dear NMR Users:

Mnova NMR data analysis software is available free to all current students, staff, and faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Our current licenses have been tested with the software through version 15.1

Please note that the software requires access to the Mnova license server at least once every 90 days.

  • For computers connected to a University network (meaning an on-campus wired connection, a wireless connection to IllinoisNet or by connecting to the University's VPN), the software will automatically renew its license.
    • NOTE: the wireless network "IllinoisNet_Guest" will NOT work, as it is not behind the University's firewall, unless you ALSO use the VPN
  • For off-campus computers that do not connect to the VPN, the software will stop working after 90 days and you will need to connect to the VPN to renew the license. If you leave the University of Illinois, you will no longer have access to the VPN so your software will not be able to check out a license and will stop working.

Installing the Mnova software

To obtain your own copy of the Mnova software, follow these instructions carefully.

  1. Download the Mnova software.  Go to this link to download Mnova NMR software for your computer.
https://mestrelab.com/software/mnova/nmr/.  Click on the link appropriate to your operating system.
    • NOTE: Be sure to save the file to your Downloads folder or other convenient, known location.
    • If you need something older than the current version, click on "Downloads" in the top navigation, then scroll down on the web site to “Download previous versions” and select "15.1" or whatever version is appropriate for you and your operating system.
    • Mnova v15.1 has been tested with Windows 11 (v24H2) and MacOS Sequoia 15.2.

  2. Install the softwareOnce the software download is completed, locate the MestReNova-[version] file.  Double-click on the file to run, and proceed to install.
    • The MestReNova program directory is about 1.4 GB, so be sure you have enough free space.
    • After the installation is complete, you can delete the installation file from your "Downloads" directory if you need to free up space.

  3. Download the license files. These license files tell the Mnova software where to go to check out a license.
    • Download all 5 license files, and save them to your Downloads folder or other convenient, known location as you will need them in the next step. It is possible that someone could email you all 5 licenses.
    • To download the license files:
      • Go to: https://uofi.app.box.com/v/scs-nmr-mnova
      • Click on the first license's file name. Box will open a new screen but will be unable to preview the file.
      • Click on the blue "Download" button.
      • After each file has been downloaded, click the Back button in your browser, and repeat for the next file until all 5 have been downloaded.

  4. Install the license files
    • Open the Mnova NMR software, and the "Registration Wizard" will appear.
    • Click on the Install button under the folder labeled "If you already have your license file(s)..."
    • A window will open, asking you to locate the license files.  Navigate to your "Downloads" folder.
    • Select the first license file, then click Open.
    • A window will appear telling you that the license file was successfully installed, and that the Mnova software has to be restarted.  Do not restart the software until all 5 licenses have been installed. Click OK to close this window.
    • Repeat until all 5 license files have been installed, then click Close to close the "Registration Wizard" window.

  5. Close and restart the software
    • Click FileExit, then restart the software.

  6. Verify the licenses
    • Click on File > Help, then click on the box next to License Manager.
    • You should see 5 lines in the "Licenses" section with green check boxes.
    • Once you have successfully installed the license files, you can proceed to use the Mnova software even when not connected to the Internet (though on-line support features will not work).

Troubleshooting

  • Software does not load properly AND the Registration Wizard does not appear
    • Your license files may be properly added, but may not be valid for this version.  You should download and install the newest license files.
    • Click on File > Help, then click on the box next to License Manager.
    • Click on the "Shopping Cart" icon and the "Registration Wizard" will appear.
    • Go back to Step 3 to download the newest license files, and proceed through the remaining instructions.

  • The software will not check out a license:
    • Be sure you are connected to a University network.  This includes:
      • A wired connection inside a University of Illinois building
      • A wireless connection to IllinoisNet
        • IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are connected to "IllinoisNet_Guest", then you must also use the University's VPN. The wireless network "IllinoisNet_Guest" is not behind the University's firewall so without the VPN your computer will not be able to contact the license server.
      • A connection to the University's VPN
  • If you recently upgraded your operating system and the Mnova software will not load
    • Try downloading and installing the newest version of Mnova software. You do not need to uninstall the old version before installing the new version.
