Canvas@Illinois, Instructors, Adding and deleting rosters from a registrar-affiliated Canvas space

How do I add or delete rosters associated with my Canvas course?

Overview

After your Canvas site is created, you may need to revise which rosters/sections are associated with your course site. For example, you may want to include both your lecture and discussion sections in the same course site or you may need to delete a section from your course site. Changes like these must be made in the Space Request Application (SRA): go.illinois.edu/SRA.

Note: Help Desk staff cannot make these changes on behalf of the course requester and will instead guide instructors through this process.

Add a roster to your Canvas space

  1. Go to the Space Request Application (SRA): go.illinois.edu/SRA
  2. Log in by entering your NetID and password to authenticate with DUO. 
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the Canvas Space Request Status and Edit link.

  4. You will see a table with all of your previous space requests. To edit your request, select the title of the space you need to edit.

  5. Select any of the rosters listed to the right of Selected Rosters.

  6. Select the Add New Rosters link to open a search.

  7. In the text fields, enter a Rubric and Number (for example, if you're looking for a section of ANTH 103, you'll type "ANTH" in the Rubric field and "103" in the Number field). Then select the Search button.

  8. A table of possible sections will appear based on your search. Select the checkbox next to the section(s) you want added to your course space. Then select the Add to Selected Rosters button.

  9. Confirm that your selected roster(s) appear in the Added Rosters table at the bottom of the page. Then select the Next button.

  10. On the Edit Registrar-Affiliated Space Title page, you should review your changes. Confirm the correct rosters are listed under Rosters for this Space and the Section title matches what you'd like to see (for example, when adding a new section, you may want to include the new section for consistency). If all is correct, select the Next button.

  11. On the Summary of Request page, this is the final summary of your edits. Again, confirm that your rosters look correct and the newly added roster is listed to the right of Added Rosters. Then select the Submit button to save and submit your changes.

  12. Your changes are saved when you see the Space Request Saved page. You can expect to see the sections added to Canvas within 30 minutes, and students added to those sections within 2-4 hours.

Delete a roster from your Canvas space

  1. Go to the Space Request Application (SRA): https://go.illinois.edu/SRA
  2. Log in by entering your NetID and password to authenticate with DUO. 
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the Canvas Space Request Status and Edit link.

  4. You will see a table with all of your previous space requests. To edit your request, select the title of the space you need to edit.

  5. Select any of the rosters listed to the right of Selected Rosters (it doesn't matter which roster you select).

  6. On the Edit Rosters page, select the checkbox to the left of the roster that you want to remove.

  7. You'll notice that the Currently Assigned Rosters table is now updated and the removed roster is listed below the table. If your changes look correct, select the Next button to proceed.

  8. On the Edit Registrar-Affiliated Space Title page, you may want to update the Section title to make it consistent with your changes (for example, in the screenshot below, the Section title says "Sections A, ONL" even though only Section A is selected; in this case, you should change the title to "Section A"). Once everything is correct, select the Next button.

  9. On the Summary of Request page, you'll see a summary of your changes. Confirm that the correct roster/CRN is listed as removed. In the Summary of Space area, confirm that all of your changes to the title and roster(s) look correct. Then select the Submit button to save your changes.

  10. Your changes are saved when you see the Space Request Saved page. You can expect to see the section(s) removed from your Canvas course within 30 minutes.

Note: You can also choose to delete your request (Canvas@Illinois , Instructors, Delete a Requested Space), which would also delete the Canvas space, and start over by completing a new space request.
